Welcome to my website. My name is Marieke Struijk, and I’m a film director and photographer from the Netherlands. Looking through the lens is my way of experiencing and observing how people move through the world and the emotions they carry. I’m interested in the small moments where personal themes appear, especially in the space between people, in what is said and what stays silent.

My filmmaking began as a teenager when I borrowed my father’s camera to photograph and film friends and family. Behind the lens I found a place to observe and notice how someone’s energy fills the room or how a conversation changes the air. That way of observing still guides my work today.

I’m drawn to slice-of-life stories and intimate settings, following subtle gestures and everyday interactions. I like to stay close to one character and follow how feelings and behaviour toward one another shift over time. Through those interactions I explore how we shape each other’s, and our own, sense of self.

On set I care most about trust. I believe the way people move and interact behind the camera becomes visible on screen as well, so I aim to create a calm and open working environment in which all expertise and creativity are highly respected. I prepare thoroughly with actors, building backstories together and inviting the crew to think along from the earliest stages.

My first fiction short, Sweet, Heart, is currently in post-production. I’m writing a second short film set in a relationship therapy environment, exploring how love and power dynamics can blur and invite toxic patterns into romantic relationships. I’m developing my voice toward longer films, staying close to themes of belonging, vulnerability, pressure to succeed and our human need for connection.

Alongside film I work as a photographer, approaching portraits with the same philosophy I bring to filmmaking. This gives me extra time to observe people and sharpen my eye. From my interest in human emotions, I also founded De Coachkade, a place where young people can make room for their feelings and find their own words. This experience continues to inspire me as a filmmaker.
